Check If Your Email Is in a Breach (Your Passwords May Already Be for Sale)

Have my emails been breached?

Your company’s passwords may already be for sale, and you’d have no way to know.

That’s not a scare tactic. It’s how most data breaches play out. The breach usually doesn’t happen at your business. It happens at a website or service your team uses. And the damage shows up later, at your door.

How your logins end up for sale

  1. A site your team uses gets breached. It could be a software tool, an online store, a conference sign-up page, or an old account nobody remembers creating.
  2. The stolen email-and-password combos get bundled into lists. Those lists are sold and traded on the dark web.
  3. Attackers buy the lists and try them on your real accounts: email, banking, and your business systems.
  4. If anyone reused a password, that’s the way in. Nobody had to hack you directly.

Most businesses never hear about the original breach. They only find out when an account gets taken over.

Check your own email today

You can check whether your email address has shown up in a known breach for free:

  1. Go to haveibeenpwned.com — a free, well-known breach-checking service.
  2. Enter your work email address.
  3. See which breaches it appeared in, and what was exposed (passwords, phone numbers, addresses).

Try it with your personal email too. Most people find at least one result.

If your email shows up

Don’t panic. A result doesn’t mean you’ve been hacked. It means a password you used somewhere was exposed. Here’s what to do:

  • Change the password on that site, if you still use it.
  • Change it anywhere else you used the same password. This is the step that matters most.
  • Turn on two-step login, starting with your email.
  • Use a password manager so every account gets its own password going forward.

Why a one-time check isn’t enough

New breaches happen every week. Checking once tells you about the past, not tomorrow. And checking one email address doesn’t cover the rest of your team.

That’s why we watch for this continuously for our clients. If a Verus client’s credentials turn up in a breach, we catch it and get the password changed before someone else uses it. It’s quiet and constant, and it closes a door most businesses don’t know is open.

Not sure what’s already out there with your company’s name on it? We can check for your whole domain, not just one inbox.
